Sumatra is the largest island within Indonesia. Coffees here can have wooden notes, heavy textures, low acidity, and flavors that range from earthy, cedary, and spicy, to fermented fruit, cocoa, herbs, leather, and tobacco. Indonesia produces mostly rusticflavored Robusta and a small proportion of Arabica. The first coffee plantations in Sumatra appeared in 1888, and they are now the largest producer of Indonesian Robusta, supplying around 75 percent of the country’s total output.
